this set of drawers was found by the side of the road. at the time i was a student with no money and i just needed furniture. i'm pretty sure my dad helped me carry this set of drawers to my room in the garage, and there it stayed until i moved, and it has travelled with me to my different houses since. it was not exciting, but it was free, and it held my clothes.
i had been thinking it was time to upgrade or to redo this piece, as i had worked out most other things in our bedroom. when we moved we bought our yellow bed (which i love), i had stained and painted some wine crates for bedside tables, i had put in a shelf (above this dresser) to hold pictures and trinkets, and this was one of the last big pieces in the room that i wasn't happy with. when i was looking at furniture redo projects, i started seeing the two-tone timber and white which i really liked. but i love colour, so had to work out how to get that in as well.
so i took off the old knobs, took the drawers out and started sanding (that is always the least fun part but you can't do the fun bits until the sanding is done!). i borrowed my dad's belt sander which was really helpful for the drawers. as i was staining these (as opposed to painting) i had to get much more of the existing stain and gloss off than on the body. for the body, the main priority was getting the gloss off so the new paint would stick. after sanding the main body, i got out the spakfilla to fix up some dents, but i did this only on the body as you would see it after staining on the drawers. once ready for paint, the painters tape came out. the top was painted first (i think i did four coats), then the remainder of the base was painted. after this came my critical error :( i used spray gloss over antique white house paint. it went yellow :( i was not very happy at all. so i undid my hard work and sanded it back. this time i used a primer coat of white, then used a vivid white with the gloss in the paint instead of having to coat it. worked much much better (it still looks white!!). the final touch was the knobs. after much umming and ahhing (they are real words right?) i decided on these ceramic ones. there were some glass ones i really liked that i could only order online, and without seeing how sturdy they were i was worried they might break. i think the ones i ended up with work well, as they tie back into the white body.
here is what i ended up with.
it is not an overly well made piece of furniture, with some bits being a chipboard type product, and others being regular pine, but with a bit of a makeover, you wouldn't know it unless you got out a fine tooth comb and magnifying glass.
do you like it? what transformations have you undertaken and were they a success?
all materials i purchased from bunnings except the knobs
paint:
- vivid white in semi-gloss by dulux
- safflower in low sheen by taubmans
- quickdry gloss by dulux (do not use on white!!)
knobs:
- white etching ceramic knob from zakkia

HOME INSPIRATION FROM A FLORIST
what i love particularly about the space is that it is an aesthetic that is industrial, fun, and its a look that can be created inexpensively. just cos something is not expensive doesn't mean it looks drab. how bright and fun is this space!
the image above is a great one. warm lighting with wall-mounted crates and a chalkboard painted island. crates like this can be obtained from local wine shops that sell expensive wine. quite often they have no use for them so you can pick them up without breaking the bank. alternatively if you cannot source them, you can make them! they are not complicated and could be made quite simply. the chalkboard island could be done with an old piece of furniture you already have or one that you pick up on the side of the road that needs a revamp. put on a lick of paint, replace the handles and bang! an industrial style funky storage unit!
again a super simple yet effective aesthetic. plywood panels with chalk writing and a ladder. both very easily obtained without breaking the bank. and the best thing about chalk - you can change it up depending on your mood or the season!
more cute details. step ladder is an ikea buy, vintage crates can be purchased on ebay (old fruit crates etc.) or you could stain some wine boxes if you have any left over from your wall unit above.
metal screen with plants! love! industrial and fresh! and there is that ikea stepladder and a crate. such an effective aesthetic and yet not a complicated one!

A CHARMING RENTAL
i know, i know, where have i been? i am one of those people who become really into things for a while and then i kind of come out of the cocoon and back to reality. well here i am, semi back in reality after discovering a new series of books. i am still reading (its currently a 7 book series with each book being about a thousand pages (literally!)). i am, however, determined to get back to reality as much as i would like to live in book land forever!
i started going back through all the blog posts i'd missed from the last few weeks and came across this cute vintage home. i think what captured me the most is that it is a rental. granted, work has been done by those renting it, but they have made it home for them and a charming home it is. and one of the most exciting things about a fantastic rental is that it doesn't seem so far out of reach - imagine what you could do to your place, rental or no!!!!!
this is nelly's home. nelly is an interior designer (twinkle and whistle) who has been renting this cottage and has transformed it, but not by breaking the bank. there is a mix of everything from vintage ebay finds, to ikea finds, to an eames chair! granted, they had some great starting points - floorboards, high ceilings, fireplaces etc., but that on its own has not made for the beautiful home you can see above. vintage and new have been mixed up, the space has been personalised and there are some lovely warm colours throughout.

SHOPS I LOVE: AFFORDABLE
I am all about mixing it up. There are not many who can afford a home full of expensive designer furniture and homewares, and you can still have a lovely home without breaking the bank 1,000 times over. I find that these stores are great for picking up things that might complement a feature piece. I have purchased from all of these stores and am happy with how they work together with my handmade pieces and the few splurge items I have picked up along the way!
Ikea
Who knew how many looks you could get from an Ikea catalogue! They have so much in so many different styles that there will be something that goes with what you already have! And really, all these products are kind of designer still (it's all designed in Sweden), just without the price tag. Ikea work hard to ensure that they make nice pieces that are affordable.
Unfortunately you can't purchase online, but check out the web to see if there is a store close by.

West Elm
A recent discovery with the help of one of my friends from the states. Well made, contemporary, funky and fun furniture and homewares that don't cost a gazillion dollars. If you are lucky enough to live in Sydney, they have just opened a store with Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma (also great stores but a little more pricey) in Bondi. If you are not in Sydney, they ship anywhere in Australia. They don't have all the products you can get in the states, but they are continually expanding the range to include more of what you can get overseas.

Target
An unlikely candidate I know, but sometimes you can pick up that something that you are looking for. I bought a nice tall silver lantern from there for $30 or something and you would never know. Try it out from time to time and you might just get lucky! You can now shop online, but there should also be a store near you!

Typo
Trendy paper goods and home decor items, Typo is a goodie! Lots of cute little accent items that can be worked into your setup! i particularly like the strings of 10 lanterns, some of which are patterned. the patters change from time to time. Maybe just also keep in mind to check the quality of the item you are buying prior to purchasing. I've had mostly good things but the occasional item that doesn't last long.
